Carlos Ruiz Zafón nasceu em Barcelona, em 1964. Em 1993, ganhou o prêmio Ebedé de literatura com seu primeiro romance, O Príncipe da Névoa, que vendeu mais de 150.000 exemplares na Espanha e foi traduzido em vários idiomas. Desde então, publicou quatro romances e transformou-se em uma das maiores revelações literárias dos últimos tempos com A Sombra do Vento, finalista dos prêmios literários espanhóis Fernando Lara 2001 e Llibreter 2002. O autor vive atualmente em Los Angeles, onde escreve roteiros para o cinema e trabalha em um novo romance. Zafón colabora também nos jornais espanhóis La Vanguardia e El País.
