Simone Weil nasceu em Paris em 1909. Nascida em uma família de judeus não-praticantes, Weil foi uma das pensadoras mais audazes e originais do século vinte. Formou-se em filosofia na École Normale Supérieure. Em 1934, a fim de poder falar com conhecimento de causa da condição operária, trabalha nas fábricas metalúrgicas de Paris. Em 1936 parte para Espanha, onde participa, ao lado dos republicanos, na Guerra Civil. Colabora com jornais ligados à Resistência e, em 1942, deixa a França e parte para Nova Iorque com os pais, fugindo ao extermínio nazista. Irá depois para Londres, onde continua a sua luta contra o nazismo. Morre nessa cidade em 1943, com apenas 34 anos.
