OSCAR WILDE

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) nasceu na Irlanda em 1854. Ao longo de sua carreira como escritor, produziu poemas, contos, ensaios e um único romance: O retrato de Dorian Gray. As peças teatrais alçaram-no ao sucesso na última década do século XIX. O êxito literário também lhe rendeu uma situação financeira abastada, que lhe proporcionou, consequentemente, uma vida desregrada e extravagante. Em maio de 1895, acabou condenado a dois anos de trabalhos forçados por cometer sodomia – a homossexualidade era considerada crime na época. A prisão foi sua ruína. Em 1897, mudou-se para Paris e passou a usar o pseudônimo Sebastian Melmoth. Morreu em 1900, de meningite – agravada pelo alcoolismo e pela sífilis.
