When Wislawa Szymborksa's View with a Grain of Sand, also translated by Stanislaw Baraczak and Clare Cavanagh, was published shortly after its author's award of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1996, the Polish poet, hitherto all but unknown outside her own country, became an international name. More than 10,000 copies of the book have been sold in Britain alone. WISLAWA SZYMBORSKA

Wislawa Szymborska nasceu em 1923 em Bnin, na Polônia. Em 1931 mudou-se com a família para Cracóvia. Estudou literatura e sociologia na universidade de Cracóvia. A partir de 1953 e por quase trinta anos trabalhou na revista literária Zycie Literackie. Recebeu o prêmio Nobel de literatura em 1996. Ao longo da vida, publicou doze pequenas coletâneas de poemas. Morreu em fevereiro de 2012.
