Thomas Bernhard austríaco, nasceu em Heerlen, na Holanda, em 1931. É um dos maiores nomes da literatura do século XX, com uma vasta obra que vai do romance ao drama, passando pelo relato autobiográfico. Entre seus títulos consagrados estão Perturbação, O sobrinho de Wittgenstein, Árvores abatidas, O náufrago e Extinção. Morreu em Oshlsdorf, na Áustria, em 1989.
