Harper Lee nasceu em 1926, em Monroeville, Alabama. Cursou a Huntington College, estudou Direito na Universidade do Alabama e passou um ano na Universidade de Oxford. Nos anos 1950, mudou-se para Nova York, onde escreveu O sol é para todos, ganhador do Prêmio Pulitzer em 1961. Pouco depois do sucesso do livro e da versão cinematográfica de 1962 (ganhadora do Oscar), Harper Lee se retirou da vida pública. Em 14 julho de 2015, 55 anos após o único outro trabalho publicado da autora, foi lançado Go set a watchman, (publicado no Brasil com o título Vá, coloque um vigia).
