Solomon Northup nasceu em julho de 1808 em Nova York. Filho de um escravo liberto, nasceu como cidadão livre e se tornou fazendeiro e violinista, dono de uma propriedade em Hebron. Em 1841, foi sequestrado e vendido como escravo. Viveu doze anos em uma fazenda de algodão na Louisiana.
