WILLIAM GOLDING

William Golding nasceu na Cornualha, Inglaterra, em 1911. Antes de se tornar escritor, foi ator, músico e professor primário, entre outras atividades. Em 1935, lançou seu primeiro livro, Poems. Em 1940, ingressou na Marinha Britânica e participou de ações militares durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Senhor das Moscas, seu primeiro romance, foi publicado em 1954, depois de ser rejeitado por uma série de editoras. Escreveu outros dez romances, além de uma peça teatral e livros de ensaios. Em 1980, recebeu o Booker Prize por Ritos de passagem e, em 1983, o Prêmio Nobel de Literatura pelo conjunto da obra. Foi sagrado cavaleiro britânico em 1988. Morreu em 1993, aos 81 anos. Sobre seus romances, a Fundação Nobel afirmou que “iluminam a condição humana no mundo de hoje”.
