In the late 1930s, civil war grips Spain. When General Franco and his Fascists succeed in overthrowing the government, hundreds of thousands are forced to flee in a treacherous journey over the mountains to the French border. Among them is Roser, a pregnant young widow, who finds her life intertwined with that of Victor Dalmau, an army doctor and the brother of her deceased love. ISABEL ALLENDE

Isabel Allende nasceu em 1942, no Peru, onde seu pai era diplomata. Viveu no Chile entre 1945 e 1975, com longos períodos de residência em outros lugares, na Venezuela até 1988 e, a partir de então, na Califórnia. Começou a carreira literária como jornalista no Chile e na Venezuela. Em 1982, seu primeiro romance, A casa dos espíritos, tornou-se um dos títulos míticos da literatura latino-americana. A ele se seguiram muitos outros, todos com grande sucesso internacional. Seus livros já foram traduzidos para 35 idiomas. Recebeu o Prêmio Nacional de Literatura 2010, no Chile, e o Prêmio Hans Christian Andersen, em 2012, este último pela série As Aventuras da Águia e do Jaguar.
