William S. Burroughs nasceu em 1914, em St. Louis, Estados Unidos. Na década de 1940 mudou-se para Nova York, onde iniciaria sua carreira literária e faria amizade com Jack Kerouac e Allen Ginsberg, entre outros escritores beat. Teve inúmeras experiências com alucinógenos: foi viciado em diversas drogas, incluindo morfina, e por vezes traficou narcóticos (e foi preso por isso). Em 1951, matou sua mulher em um acidente com arma de fogo, o que ele próprio mais tarde reputou como experiência definidora para sua carreira de escritor. Escreveu os romances autobiográficos Junky (1953, publicado sob o pseudônimo de William Lee), em que explora suas experiências com a heroína, Queer (escrito na primeira metade da década de 50, mas publicado apenas em 1985), sobre o homossexualismo, e Almoço nu. Este último é muito mais radical em suas inovações estilísticas e foi publicado primeiramente na França, em 1959. Cartas do Yage, de 1963, traz a correspondência mantida com Ginsberg enquanto Burroughs viajava pela América do Sul na busca do yage, também conhecido como ayahuasca. Após uma temporada na Europa, Burroughs voltou para Nova York no início da década de 1970, onde passou a lecionar e conviver com intelectuais e artistas como Andy Warhol e Susan Sontag. Na década de 1980, era visto como um gigante contracultural: tanto sua personalidade quanto sua obra viraram referências. No final da vida, mudou-se para Lawrence (Kansas), onde morreu, em agosto de 1997. É autor, também, da trilogia Cities of Red Night, The Place of Dead Roads e The Western Lands, entre outros livros.
