George Orwell é o pseudônimo do escritor Eric Blair, nascido na Índia em 1903, quando seus pais trabalhavam para o governo britânico. Orwell foi educado no tradicional colégio britânico Eton, e se juntou às forças imperiais na Birmânia em 1922. Escreveu romances e livros de não-ficção, como A revolução dos bichos, 1984, Dias na Birmânia, entre outros. Além de contribuir para o jornal Observer, teve textos publicados no Tribune e no Manchester Evening News. O escritor morreu em 21 de janeiro de 1950, de tuberculose, aos 46 anos.
