Philip Roth nasceu em 1933, em Newark, Nova Jersey (Estados Unidos). Um dos maiores escritores americanos, escreveu mais de trinta livros. Recebeu, em 1998, a Medalha Nacional das Artes na Casa Branca e, em 2002, conquistou a mais elevada premiação concedida pela Academia Americana de Artes e Letras, a Medalha de Ouro de Ficção. Em 2005, Roth tornou-se o terceiro escritor vivo a ter sua obra publicada numa edição abrangente e definitiva da Library of America. Assíduo em premiações literárias, já ganhou o Pulitzer e o Man Booker Prize, além da Gold Medal in Fiction, a mais alta distinção da American Academy of Arts and Letters. Faleceu em 2018.
