Set in a Newark neighborhood during a terrifying polio outbreak, Nemesis is a wrenching examination of the forces of circumstance on our lives. Bucky Cantor is a vigorous, dutiful twenty-three-year-old playground director during the summer of 1944. A javelin thrower and weightlifter, he is disappointed with himself because his weak eyes have excluded him from serving in the war alongside his contemporaries. Philip Roth nasceu em 1933, em Newark, Nova Jersey (Estados Unidos). Um dos maiores escritores americanos, escreveu mais de trinta livros. Recebeu, em 1998, a Medalha Nacional das Artes na Casa Branca e, em 2002, conquistou a mais elevada premiação concedida pela Academia Americana de Artes e Letras, a Medalha de Ouro de Ficção. Em 2005, Roth tornou-se o terceiro escritor vivo a ter sua obra publicada numa edição abrangente e definitiva da Library of America. Assíduo em premiações literárias, já ganhou o Pulitzer e o Man Booker Prize, além da Gold Medal in Fiction, a mais alta distinção da American Academy of Arts and Letters. Faleceu em 2018.
