Émile Zola nasceu em 1840, em Paris e morreu em 1902, na mesma cidade, por asfixia. Publicou seu primeiro livro, Contos a Ninon, aos 24 anos. Balzac, Stendhal e sobretudo Flaubert foram suas grandes influências literárias. Polêmico, corajoso, revolucionário, interessava-se também por leituras de cunho científico, como Introdução ao estudo da medicina experimental, de Claude Bernard, e as teorias evolucionistas de Charles Darwin. Sua grande obra é o conjunto de vinte romances Os Rougon-Macquart, do qual faz parte seu livro mais célebre, Germinal.
