Considered by many to be Dickens' finest novel, Great Expectations traces the growth of the book's narrator, Philip Pirrip (Pip), from a boy of shallow dreams to a man with depth of character. From its famous dramatic opening on the bleak Kentish marshes, the story abounds with some of Dickens' most memorable characters. Among them are the kindly blacksmith Joe Gargery, the mysterious convict Abel Magwitch, the eccentric Miss Havisham and her beautiful ward Estella, Pip's good-hearted room-mate Herbert Pocket and the pompous Pumblechook. As Pip unravels the truth behind his own ‘great expectations’ in his quest to become a gentleman, the mysteries of the past and the convolutions of fate through a series of thrilling adventures serve to steer him towards maturity and his most important discovery of all - the truth about himself.

Charles Dickens nasceu em Landport, no condado de Hampshire, na Inglaterra, em 1812, mas mudou-se com a família para Londres em 1822. Já aos quinze anos, após deixar um emprego de escriturário em uma firma de advocacia, começou a fazer reportagens para um pequeno jornal londrino. Teve seu primeiro conto publicado em uma revista em 1833 e, a partir de então, escreveu diversos romances, publicados principalmente em forma de folhetim. Além de romances, escreveu contos, peças e artigos jornalísticos. Em suas obras, abordou alguns dos principais problemas sociais da Inglaterra vitoriana, como a violência, a pobreza, o desemprego e as péssimas condições de trabalho nas fábricas. Suas obras conquistaram prestígio ainda em sua época, levando-o a ser considerado o escritor inglês mais popular da Era Vitoriana. É autor de clássicos como Oliver Twist (1837-39), David Copperfield (1849) e Grandes esperanças (1860), entre outros. Dickens faleceu em junho de 1870, vítima de um acidente vascular cerebral.
