Amartya Sen nasceu em Santiniketan, atual Bangladesh, em 1933. Após a Partição de 1947, emigrou com a família para a Índia, onde estudou antes de se doutorar em economia pelo Trinity College, em Cambridge, Reino Unido. Sen recebeu em 1998 o prêmio Nobel de economia por seu trabalho sobre a economia do bem-estar social. É professor da Universidade Harvard.
