Pablo Neruda nasceu em 1904, no Chile. Considerado um dos mais importantes poetas do século XX, estreou na literatura com apenas vinte anos, com a obra Crepusculário (1923). Por muito tempo, conciliou a vida literária com a diplomática: foi cônsul do Chile na Espanha e no México e embaixador chileno na França. Em 1971, recebeu o Prêmio Nobel de Literatura e o Prêmio Lênin da Paz. Morreu em 1973. Em sua vasta obra destacam-se Residência na Terra (1933), España en el corazón (1937), Canto Geral (1950), Cem sonetos de amor (1959), Memorial de Isla Negra (1964), A espada incendiada (1970) e Confesso que vivi (1974). Lançado postumamente, o Livro das perguntas foi editado no Brasil em 2008, com ilustrações do espanhol Isidro Ferrer (também na edição original) e tradução do poeta Ferreira Gullar.
