John Berger nasceu em Londres, em 1926. Aos 15 anos era anarquista. Depois da Segunda Guerra Mundial, quando já era escritor, passou a ser duramente criticado por sua simpatia ao marxismo. Ele é famoso por suas obras de ficção — romances e contos — e não-ficção, em especial livros de crítica de arte. Destaque para Modos de ver, de 1972, referência para toda uma geração de historiadores da arte, ao refletir sobre a relação entre o que vemos e o que sabemos ou acreditamos.
