Dante Alighieri nasceu em 1265 em Florença, onde viveu a primeira parte da sua vida até ser exilado. O exílio foi ainda maior do que uma simples separação física de sua terra natal. É considerado pelos italianos seu maior poeta. Foi muito mais do que apenas um literato, redigiu um poema, de viés épico e teológico, La Divina Commedia (A Divina Comédia), que se tornou a base da língua italiana moderna e culminou na afirmação do modo medieval de entender o mundo. Faleceu em 1321 em Ravena.
