Umberto Eco nasceu em Alexandria, Itália, em 1932. Começou a cursar Direito na Universidade de Turim, mas logo decidiu dedicar-se à Filosofia, tendo se doutorado em 1954. Começou a trabalhar como editor de programas culturais na rede estatal italiana de televisão. Foi professor de Comunicação Visual e Semiótica. Detentor de inúmeros prêmios e títulos, Eco ficou conhecido como crítico, semiólogo, romancista e articulista. Propôs teorias estéticas e uma avaliação das vanguardas e dos impactos da sociedade globalizada e de informação na cultura humana. Entre suas obras ensaísticas destacam-se: Kant e o ornitorrinco (1997) e Sobre a literatura (2002). Entre suas coletâneas, ressaltam-se: Diário mínimo (1963) e O segundo diário mínimo (1990). Em 1980 estreou na ficção com O nome da rosa (Prêmio Strega 1981), que deu origem ao filme de mesmo nome. Em seguida vieram O pêndulo de Foucault (1988), Baudolino (2000), História da beleza (2004), História da feiúra (2007), entre outros. Faleceu em 19 de fevereiro de 2016.
