Sinopse

THE RIVER BETWEEN explores life on the Makuyu and Kameno ridges of Kenya in the early days of white settlement. Faced with an alluring, new religion and 'magical' customs, the Gikuyu people are torn between those who fear the unknown and those who see beyond it. Some fellow Joshua and his fiery brand of Christianity while others proudly pursue tribal independence. In the midst of this disunity stands Waiyaki, a dedicated visionary born to a line of prophets. He struggles to educate the tribe- a task he sees as the only unifying link between the two factions - but his plans for the future raise issues which will determine both his own and the Gikuyu's survival.

NGUGI WA THIONGO

Ngugi wa Thiong’o nasceu em Kamirithu, Quênia, em 1938. Estudou inglês na Universidade de Makerere, em Uganda. Seu romance de estreia, Weep not, Child (1964), foi o primeiro a ser publicado em inglês por um escritor da África Oriental. Em 1977, foi arbitrariamente preso pelo governo queniano por escrever uma peça teatral com críticas políticas. Recluso, decidiu renunciar à língua inglesa, à religião católica e ao seu nome de batismo, James, e passou a escrever em kikuyu, língua bantu. Seu romance seguinte, Devil on the Cross, foi escrito no papel higiênico da cela. Em 1992, assumiu o cargo de professor de literatura comparada na Universidade de Nova York. Depois de 20 anos sem publicar nada devido ao seu ativismo político, lançou em 2006 o romance Wizard of the Crow. No Brasil tem publicados o romance Um grão de trigo (2015) e o primeiro volume de sua trilogia de memórias, Sonhos em tempo de guerra (2015).
