Haruki Murakami nasceu em Kyoto, no Japão, em janeiro de 1949. Cresceu em Kobe e se graduou na Universidade Waseda, em Tóquio. Viveu por quatro anos nos Estados Unidos, onde deu aulas em Princeton, e regressou ao país natal em 1995. É considerado um dos autores mais importantes da atual literatura japonesa. Sua obra foi traduzida para mais de quarenta idiomas e recebeu importantes prêmios, como o Yomiuri — que já foi concedido a autores como Yukio Mishima, Kenzaburo Oe e Kobo Abe — e o Franz Kafka Prize. O escritor vive atualmente nas proximidades de Tóquio.
