Herbert Read tornou-se professor de belas artes na Universidade de Edimburgo. Em 1931 também foi professor do Trinity College, Cambridge, de 1929 a 1930 e da Universidade de Liverpool, de 1935 a 1936. Foi professor de belas artes na Universidade de Harverd, de 1953 a 1954. Entre seus trabalhos publicados destacam-se: A Concise of Form of Modern Sculpture, Art and Alienation, The Origins of Form in Art, Arp e Henry Moore. Faleceu em 1968.
