Anton Pávlovitch Tchekhov nasceu em Taganrog, sul da Rússia, em 1860. Em 1879, ingressou na Faculdade de Medicina de Moscou e passou a publicar pequenos textos em periódicos da cidade. Obteve o diploma em 1884 e começou a trabalhar como médico, mas sua fama como escritor e contista cresceu continuamente, e em 1886 tornou-se colaborador da revista 'Nóvoie Vrêmia'. A montagem de sua peça A Gaivota, em 1898, por Stanislavski, obteve grande êxito, o que levou o Teatro de Arte de Moscou a encomendar outras peças para o autor. Surgram então Tio Vânia (1897), Três irmãs (1901) e O jardim das cerejeiras (1904). Em 1898 adquiriu uma vila em Ialta, na Crimeia, onde se estabeleceu para cuidar de uma tuberculose. Ali escreveu um de seus mais famosos contos, A dama do cachorrinho (1899). Em maio de 1901, casou-se com a atriz Olga Knipper, que vivia em Moscou. Junto com ela, viajou três anos depois a Badenweiler, na Alemanha, para tratar sua doença, mas acabou falecendo nesta cidade em 15 de julho de 1904.
