Mais que qualquer outro ilustrador, Doré simbolizou o idealismo da estética romântica e criou em suas gravuras um universo pleno de fantasia e imaginação. Paul Gustave Doré nasceu na cidade francesa de Estrasburgo, em 6 de janeiro de 1832. Logo deu mostras de extraordinário talento e, em 1848, um ano depois de se mudar para Paris, começou a colaborar como ilustrador na revista Journal pour Rire. Mais tarde publicou vários livros de litografias, entre os quais se destaca Os Trabalhos de Hércules. Doré contribuiu para o florescimento da gravura no século XIX com ilustrações de importantes obras da literatura universal. Entre os mais de cem volumes que ilustrou incluem-se as Obras Completas de Rabelais (1854), A Divina Comédia de Dante (1861), Dom Quixote (1863), a Bíblia (1866) e A Bela Adormecida no Bosque.
