Amós Oz nasceu em Jerusalém em 1939. Sua família incluía estudiosos e professores, alguns dos quais militantes de direita sionistas, que emigraram para Israel no início da década de 1930, vindos da Rússia e da Polônia. Em 1954, aos 15 anos, Amós Oz se rebelou contra o mundo de seu pai e deixou Jerusalém para morar e trabalhar no Kibutz Hulda, onde completou o ensino médio. Após completar seu serviço militar em 1961, ele retornou ao kibutz para trabalhar nos campos de algodão. Com vinte e poucos anos, seus primeiros contos foram publicados no principal periódico literário do Keshet, antes que a assembléia do kibutz o mandasse de volta a Jerusalém para estudar filosofia e literatura na Universidade Hebraica. Com seu diploma de bacharel, ele retornou ao Kibbutz Hulda onde, durante vinte e cinco anos, dividiu seu tempo entre escrever, cultivar e ensinar na Kibbutz High School. Desde a guerra de 1967, Amós Oz publicou numerosos artigos e ensaios sobre o conflito árabe-israelense, fazendo campanha por um compromisso israelense/palestino baseado no reconhecimento mútuo e coexistência entre Israel e um Estado palestino na Cisjordânia e em Gaza. Como uma das principais figuras do movimento israelense pela paz desde 1967, seus artigos, ensaios e atividades políticas fizeram dele uma figura importante em todo o mundo. Faleceu em 28 de dezembro de 2018.
