Oliver Sacks nasceu em 1933, em Londres, Inglaterra. Filho de médicos, seguiu a carreira dos pais e se formou em medicina na Universidade de Oxford. Desde 1965, mora em Nova York, onde trabalha como neurologista e professor de neurologia e psiquiatria. Iniciou sua carreira de escritor com o livro Enxaqueca, publicado em 1970. Baseado em sua experiência com pacientes da chamada “doença do sono”, seu livro Tempo de despertar inspirou o filme homônimo com Robert De Niro e Robin Williams. Oliver Sacks é conhecido por suas histórias de pessoas com distúrbios entre eles, O homem que confundiu sua mulher com um chapéu e Um antropólogo em Marte. Seu trabalho aparece regularmente na revista New Yorker, bem como várias revistas médicas. O The New York Times se referiu a ele como "o poeta laureado da medicina", e em 2002 foi premiado com o Prêmio Thomas Lewis pela Universidade Rockefeller, que reconhece o cientista como poeta. Sacks é membro honorário da Academia Americana de Artes e Letras e da Academia Americana de Artes e Ciências, e detém títulos honorários de várias universidades, incluindo Oxford, Georgetown e Universidade Católica do Peru.
