Margaret Atwood, uma das escritoras mais admiradas mundialmente, nasceu na cidade canadense de Ottawa, em 1939. Graduou-se em Artes na Universidade de Toronto e foi professora de Literatura Inglesa em várias universidades canadenses. Após viver períodos nos EUA, na França, na Inglaterra, na Itália e na Alemanha, hoje mora em Toronto. Recebeu diversos prêmios, como o Man Booker Prize de 2000 por O Assassino cego, Chevalier de l’Ordre dês Arts e dês Lettres e o Príncipe de Astúrias de 2008 pelo conjunto de sua obra, entre outros. Seus livros foram traduzidos para mais de trinta idiomas.
