Nascido em Kingston, na Jamaica, em 1970, o escritor Marlon James, primeiro jamaicano a participar da Flip (edição 2017), define a si mesmo como um “nerd”. Filho de um advogado — leitor de Shakespeare — e uma investigadora policial, cresceu em um típico subúrbio anglo-saxão — importado para os trópicos —, foi educado em colégio inglês e sempre mais afeito à leitura do que aos esportes. No Wolmers Boys School, o garoto sofria também a discriminação por ser efeminado — e gay — num país que se libertou da Inglaterra, mas não da lei de criminalização da homossexualidade. James teve então de libertar-se de sua terra-natal. Com duzentos dólares no bolso, partiu para os EUA, onde hoje leciona literatura no Macallester College, em St Paul, Minnesota, e escreveu o livro que o faria conquistar um dos maiores prêmios literários mundiais — isso depois de ter seu primeiro romance, John Crow’s Devil (2005), recusado 48 vezes. O segundo, The Bookof Night Women (2009) ganhou o Dayton Literary Peace Prize e foi finalista do National Book Critics Circle Award. Venceu o Man Booker Prize de 2015 com o livro A Brief History of Seven Killings, seu 3º romance. Publicado no Brasil com o título Breve História dos Sete Assassinatos, o livro é um épico de 686 páginas, que narra, por meio da multiplicidade de vozes e idiomas, o assassinato de sete homens da equipe de Bob Marley. A trama — real — ganhou personagens, vozes, fantasmas e alterna o inglês culto e as gírias jamaicanas e do Harlem, em Nova York, com doses de escatologia, o que o torna um desafio de linguagem.
