Robert W. Chambers nasceu no Brooklyn, no ano de 1865, estudou na Escola de Belas-Artes e na Académie Julian, em Paris, e teve suas ilustrações usadas nas revistas Life, Truth e Vogue. Foi pintor e ilustrador antes de se arriscar na literatura, mas foi com O Rei de Amarelo que se tornou conhecido. Em seguida, abandonou a literatura fantástica e passou a escrever romances água com açúcar que atendiam ao gosto de moças românticas. Chambers gostava de caçar, pescar, colecionava borboletas, arte oriental e livros raros. Morou em Nova York com a mulher e o filho até sua morte, em 1933.
