William Steig nasceu em Nova York, em 1907. Teve seus desenhos publicados na revista The New Yorker e ganhou muitos prêmios de ilustração com seus livros infantis, inclusive o Hans Christian Andersen. Em 1990 publicou Shrek, que foi adaptado para o cinema em 2001.
