John Berger nasceu em Londres, em 1926. Aos 15 anos era anarquista. Depois da Segunda Guerra Mundial, quando já era escritor, passou a ser duramente criticado por sua simpatia ao marxismo. Ele é famoso por suas obras de ficção — romances e contos — e não-ficção, em especial livros de crítica de arte.
