Charles-Pierre Baudelaire (1821-1867) foi poeta e teórico da arte francesa, sendo considerado um dos pais da tradição moderna de poesia. Rebelde durante toda a sua vida, chegou a ser expulso do colégio na infância e enviado pelo padrasto à Índia em 1840. Nunca chegou ao continente asiático; retornou a Paris assim que possível. Depois de herdar a fortuna do pai, entregou-se a uma vida boêmia, o que fez com que sua mãe lhe retirasse o controle da herança. Uma acusação de ultraje à moral pública fez com que sua obra As flores do mal fosse recolhida e o autor e a editora fossem multados.
