Herman Melville nasceu em 1º de agosto de 1819, em Nova York. Aos 18 anos, embarcou como camareiro num navio que o levou à Inglaterra. Aos 22, engajou-se na tripulação de um baleeiro para uma viagem de quatro anos pelos mares do Pacífico, mas desertou ao fim de um ano e meio, sendo capturado por canibais nas ilhas Marquesas, experiência que serviu de tema para seu primeiro livro, Typee, a peep at Polynesian life or four months residence in a valle of the Marquesas, de 1846. Depois dele vieram Ommoo, a narrative of adventures in the south seas, de 1847, e White Jacket, or the world in a Man-of-War, de 1850. Em 1851, depois do razoável sucesso alcançado, publicou o monumental Moby dick, ou a baleia branca, que foi um fracasso de vendas. A partir daí, escreveu romances, novelas e contos para as revistas da época, dentre os quais se destaca Bartleby, o escriturário, publicado no livro Piazza Tales. Faleceu em 1891, sem conhecer o sucesso que sua obra mais importante, o romance Moby Dick, faria no século XX.
