Marshall Berman nasceu em Nova York e fez seus estudos na Bronx High School of Science e nas universidades de Columbia, Oxford e Harvard. Desde o final da década de 1960, é professor de teoria política e urbanismo na City University, em Nova York. É autor de dois outros livros The politics of authenticity (1970) e Aventuras no marxismo (2001) -, bem como de inúmeros artigos sobre cultura e política. É membro do conselho editorial da revista Dissent e contribui regularmente para o jornal The Nation.
