Edward W. Said nasceu em 1935, em Jerusalém. Filho de árabes cristãos, foi educado no Cairo e, mais tarde, em Nova York, onde lecionou literatura na Universidade Columbia. Um dos mais importantes críticos literários e culturais dos Estados Unidos, Said escreveu dezenas de artigos e livros sobre a questão palestina. Morreu em 2003.
