Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" have captivated the imagination of adults and children alike since they first appeared more than a hundred years ago. Since that time many artists have attempted to capture their dreamlike combination of impossible events, precise detail and weird logic. Mervyn Peake is one of the few to have succeeded. Famed worldwide for his Gormenghast trilogy, Mervyn Peake was also an illustrator of rare and wondrous talent, whose editions of "Treasure Island" and "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" are universally admired. In the 1940s, he was commissioned to produce a set of 70 pen-and-ink drawings to accompany Lewis Carroll's two classics, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass". They are among his best work as an illustrator. Unavailable in any edition since 1978, these extraordinary illustrations, many of which were drawn on poor quality wartime paper, have been restored to their former clarity and crispness by a combination of old-fashioned craft and the latest computer technology. They are now meticulously reproduced, for the first time, as they were meant to be seen. This exquisite two-volume set is the first edition to do justice to two great English eccentrics.

Lewis Carroll, pseudônimo de Charles Ludwidge Dogson, nasceu na Inglaterra, em 1832. É o autor de um dos mais fascinantes e misteriosos livros que já foram escritos, Alice no País das Maravilhas, publicado pela primeira vez em 1865. Filho de um pastor anglicano, Caroll teve dez irmãos e cresceu em um ambiente cheio de crianças, onde aprendeu a contar histórias. Seu pai pretendia que ele também se dedicasse à vida religiosa, mas o interesse por geometria, álgebra e lógica fez com que fosse convidado a dar aulas na Universidade de Oxford. Enquanto foi professor, publicou vários livros de matemática e alguns poemas. Nessa época, conheceu Henry Liddell, que veio a ser seu grande amigo. Liddell era pai de Alice, fonte de inspiração para Alice no País das Maravilhas. Carroll também foi fotógrafo amador, e colecionava fotografias de meninas entre 8 e 12 anos de idade. Por sugestão do escritor Henry Kingsley, Alice foi publicado sem especificar se era destinado para adultos ou crianças. Foi um grande sucesso, e, desde então, esta história consta entre os mais importantes textos da literatura universal. Além de tratados matemáticos, livros de lógica, adivinhações e jogos, Lewis Carroll ainda escreveu Alice Através do Espelho, outra história famosa que envolve a mesma personagem em situações que exploram a linguagem simbólica e mostram os limites dessas formulações. Alice no País das Maravilhas reaviva em crianças e adultos a condição infantil, onde o sonho se confunde com a realidade. Faleceu em 14 de janeiro de 1898.
