Fante, who died in 1983, is receiving some belated recognition for novels like Ask the Dust and Wait Until Spring, Bandini. His biographer, Stephen Cooper, has unearthed 18 previously uncollected stories that Fante wrote over 27 years, ranging from derivative and self-indulgent juvenilia to intelligent and meaningful tales of the immigrant experience. "Prologue to Ask the Dust" is essentially a pr cis of the novel, displaying a savage energy and sense of immediacy. This and several other stories bring the Los Angeles of some 60 years ago to life. In the memorable "Mary Osaka, I Love You," Filipino dishwasher Mingo Mateo falls in love with the daughter of his Japanese employer. Mingo's friends are violently opposed to the union, but Mingo and Mary argue that politics and race should not interfere with love. They elope to Las Vegas and marry on December 7, 1941. "Bus Ride" is another, tenser tale of interracial attraction, this time between a Filipino man and a European-American woman. Fante himself was Italian and there are several stories about Italian immigrants. A family in "The Bad Woman" unite to keep a son and brother from making what they believe is a bad marriage. "The Sins of the Mother" tells of a formidable matriarch who is determined that her beautiful daughter not marry a truck driver. Like many of the stories in the volume, this one echoes with understated passion, though the prose is calm and the dialogue polite. The collection is uneven, but weaker pieces are outweighed by those that show Fante's heartbreaking and precise vision in top form.

John Fante nasceu no Colorado (Estados Unidos) em 1909. Frequentou a escola paroquial em Boulder e a Regis High School, um internato jesuíta. Também cursou a Universidade do Colorado e o Long Beach City College. Começou a escrever em 1929 e publicou seu primeiro conto em The American Mercury no ano de 1932. Escreveu várias outras histórias para os periódicos The Atlantic Monthly, The American Mercury, The Saturday Evening Post, Collier’s, Esquire e Harper’s Bazaar. Seu primeiro romance, Wait Until Spring, Bandini, foi publicado em 1938. No ano seguinte, foi lançado Ask the Dust, romance editado no Brasil apenas em 1984, sob o título de Pergunte ao Pó. Em 1940, uma coletânea de seus contos, Dago Red, foi lançada no mercado norte-americano. Enquanto isso, Fante se ocupava intensamente com roteiros para Hollywood. Alguns de seus créditos incluem Full of Life, Jeanne Eagels, My Man and I, The Reluctant Saint, My Six Loves e Walk on the Wild Side. O escritor e roteirista tornou-se diabético em 1955, e as complicações da doença ocasionaram sua cegueira, em 1978. Mas ele continuou a escrever, ditando para sua mulher, Joyce, e o resultado foi Sonhos de Bunker Hill, romance que foi publicado pela primeira vez no Brasil em 1983. John Fante morreu aos 74 anos, em 8 de maio desse mesmo ano. Em 1985, foram publicados nos Estados Unidos histórias selecionadas do autor, na compilação The Wine of Youth, e dois romances anteriores, que permaneciam inéditos, The Road to Los Angeles e 1933 Was a Bad Year. Também este último foi editado no Brasil na década de 80, com o título de 1933 Foi um Ano Ruim, dentro da onda de interesse contracultural que coloriu o início da abertura política brasileira.
