Participou da Segunda Guerra Mundial como piloto da Real Força Aérea da Inglaterra. Começou a escrever quando era adido da embaixada inglesa em Washington. Seus livros para adultos e crianças são hoje traduzidos e apreciados no mundo todo. É conhecido principalmente por seus livros infantis, entre os quais figuram A Fantástica Fábrica de Chocolate, O Crocodilo Enorme, A incrível História de Henry Sugar e outros contos, Matilda, As Bruxas e James e o Pêssego Gigante. Roald Dahl morreu em 1990, aos setenta anos.
