Arthur Schopenhauer nasceu em Dantzig, Prússia (atual Polônia), em 1788, e faleceu em 1860 em Frankfurt, Alemanha. Também conhecido como "filósofo do pessimismo", foi importante expoente da doutrina metafísica da vontade, em reação ao idealismo hegeliano. Seus escritos influenciaram a filosofia existencialista e a psicanálise freudiana.
