Elias Canetti nasceu em 1905 em Ruschuk, na Bulgária, filho de judeus sefardins. Após ter vivido em Londres, morou em Zurique, Frankfurt e Viena, voltando em 1938 para a capital inglesa, fugindo do nazismo. Prêmio Nobel de Literatura de 1981, morreu em 1994.
