Like the great painters of the 19th century, Josef Koudelka chose quarries as his subject. At the invitation of the leading global mining group, he regularly visited quarries across the globe for four years. He brought back black-and-white photographs that evoke an apocalyptic landscape. In these pictures, traces of human intervention are everywhere, yet there is no human presence to provide a sense of scale. Everywhere, nature is transformed and spoiled by human labour.
