This volume examines the many ways in which a wide variety of artists from the late 19th century to 2003 have made use of printmaking. Including over 200 illustrations, it is organized as an unfolding historical narrative with a focus on individual artists, each with a succinct text describing his or her relationship to printmaking. All the works reproduced are from the Museum of Modern Art's collection of prints. From explorations of the symbolic potential of woodcut by Paul Gauguin and Edvard Munch, to depictions of Parisian cabaret dancers in lithographed posters by Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, the book presents the early period of modern as a rich chapter in the history of the print medium. Developments unfold through the work of the German Expressionists, of Picasso and Miro, of Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol, up to the current generation of artists including Terry Winters and Kiki Smith.
